“ROSETTE” WATERCOLORS

They were born from a dream. It was the mid-1980s; I had returned to Beijing after spending many months traveling through China, Tibet, and Mongolia. It was the night before my flight back to Europe. In the dream—though I would rather not have gone—I was taken to visit an English painter, in a typical Edwardian house in a London neighborhood.
Upon entering, I saw many sheets of paper scattered haphazardly across the floor of the entryway. They were sketches, studies—filled with strange shapes and intricate, interwoven patterns. I was intrigued and fascinated, but before I could meet the artist—the master of the house—I woke up in my elegant hotel room in Beijing.
Back in Italy, the dream would occasionally resurface. I decided to try my hand at creating these strange, interwoven compositions, developing them in a harmonious way.
That is how my first *rosone* (rose window/circular design) came to be. That is how I discovered the principles of the octagon, of symmetry, and of reflection. It became a graphic exercise that brought me a sense of pure inner well-being—and each time, it held a new surprise.
